Your Body on Massage: Brain, Aches and Pains

Brain
Your brain waves start to change, moving further into their current state. So if it's morning and you're wide awake, you may feel more alert after a massage.  If you're getting an evening treatment, however, your brain waves may shift into a sleep pattern, leading to solid shut-eye that night.

Aches and Pains
You may be able to skip the aspirin because massage can trigger powerful natural pain relief: On the way to your brain, those pressures signals from your skin's nerve cells go through the spinal cord, one of your body's pain centers.  Pressure signals travel faster than pain signals, temporarily blocking any ouches.  This may be why your instinct is to press on a painful spot after you hurt yourself.

Why Heat is Good for the Body

The steam bath helps to promote false fever, a state of hyperthermia that increases the body's temperature.  Vascular flow to the skin is increased and lymphatic detoxification begins as about 500 milliliters of water is lost in 30 minutes of steam bathing.  Raising the body's temperature decreases muscular pain and joint stiffness, it also rallies an immune system response to any present illness by increasing the production of white blood cells.  Free radicals, viruses and unfriendly bacteria are slowed down and attacked while antibodies are produced.

By opening the bronchia and soothing the swelling of mucous membranes in the sinuses, respiratory diseases, coughing, sore throat and congestion can be greatly alleviated and sore muscles rested.

The skin, which is the largest organ of detoxification, is cleansed of sebaceous impurities and rehydrated.  Steam bathing the skin is greatly beneficial to a range of skin problems from teen acne to eczema and psoriasis, diseases of the immune system and especially in those cases where digestive elimination is problematic.

Massage in the Media

Business Viewpoint: Take Time to Counter Workplace Stress

Corporate America is more stressed out than ever. Just look at the average working person today and you'll see someone who is more agitated, more overworked and less aware of their body's needs than at any point in recent years.

By doing things like getting a therapeutic massage, some of our internal functions can stay in check as well...By reducing our overall stress levels, we can actually lessen the cortisol levels in our bodies, which can help boost our immunity and help us avoid getting a cold or other kinds of illnesses due to stress.

Your Body on a Massage: Glands and Immune System

Glands
Hands running over your body - even self-massage can work - do wonders for your anxienty.  The vagus nerve instructs the adrenal glands to cut back the release of stress hormones such as cortisol and vasopressin.

Immune System
Stimulated by the soothing pressure of massage, your infection-fighting white blood cells increase their activity.  In particular, natural "killer cells" go on vigilant patrol, hunting down and helping to kill viral, bacterial and cancerous cells.
